What is VoIP and IP Telephony?
VoIP and IP Telephony are regarded by many people as being the same thing.
However, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is probably more about the technology that enables routing/transmission of voice conversations over the Internet or any other IP network.
The voice data flows over a general-purpose packet-switched network, instead of the dedicated, circuit-switched voice transmission lines used in traditional telephony.
IP Telephony is perhaps best described as the end result of VoIP - voice conversations that are connected via IP data networks. IP Telephony can also incorporate many other functions and features that are not available through a traditional telephone network.
Residential, consumer level VoIP has been around for a while now. It is a cheap (and often free) way of communicating with family and friends around the world.
However, it usually lacks the quality and reliability required for professional business communications.
If you've ever used residential VoIP, you'll know that it …
- Drops out
- Often has static crackles and background hum
- Suffers from duplex and packet delivery delay (ie. longer than normal delays in the other person hearing your comment - often causing users to 'talk over' each other)
For private, home use this may be acceptable … but if you own a business it is essential that you have a more professional solution.
At Alltel, we offer a range of Business VoIP Telephony solutions that are designed to suit your business size, budget and special needs.
