Frequently asked questions

All your questions
about the NBN answered.

Do I have to switch to the NBN?

In most cases, yes. Switching to the NBN is necessary for most areas to continue receiving internet service. With the NBN rollout completed, existing ADSL network connections are now being switched off. This means you will stop receiving calls over a traditional phone line and will no longer have access to the internet via old cable networks or ADSL.

What will happen to my existing phone lines?

The Australian government will soon sever and disable all former copper or cable-based network connections. It is best to upgrade to an NBN connection as soon as it is available in your area. Or opt for a different type of internet service.

How do I switch from ADSL to the NBN?

It may sound like a daunting task, but it is easy and simple as contacting your internet service provider (ISP). Then simply request to upgrade your service if the NBN is already available in your area. If in case the NBN is not available yet, then you may look for other options such as Fixed Wireless.

How does the NBN connection process work?

The NBN connection process generally involves three key steps:

  • Step 1: Checking for NBN availability based on your address.
  • Step 2: Selecting your business NBN plan and provider.
  • Step 3: Preparing for installation.

While there are different types of NBN technology, keep in mind that you cannot choose what type of NBN connection you will have as this is determined by your location. Thus, you have to know what your NBN connection type is and understand how it will affect your internet speed while scouting for providers and choosing your NBN plan.

Finally, the NBN installation process may involve several appointments before it is completed. You may contact your ISP for assistance during setup.

How long does it take to get connected to NBN?

The typical timeframe on how soon your business NBN service can get activated is between 1 day to 3 weeks.

This may still vary depending on the availability of NBN services in your address. If an NBN connection had been previously established in your address, your business NBN service should be activated between 1-3 days. However, if your address has not had any connection to the NBN in the past, then you must first schedule an appointment with an NBN™ Co. technician to set up your NBN connection.

Are there connection fees to the business NBN?

In general, the standard installation of a business NBN service at your home or office is free of charge. But note that the standard installation fee is different from the ongoing use of the internet as provided by a retailer. To enjoy continued use of the internet, you will need to subscribe to a business NBN plan through an ISP.

Alltel offers unlimited business internet with six NBN business plans at different speed tiers. Check our business NBN deals to compare plans and prices.

What is included in my business NBN plan?

All of Alltel’s business NBN plans come with unlimited data, one static IP address, and FREE installation.

During the installation process, a technician may visit your business premises to set up your connection. This may take one or several visits. Site visits are free of charge unless you change a scheduled appointment voluntarily. When this happens, you may be subject to fees as dictated by NBN™ Co.

Furthermore, please note that our business NBN plans do not cover any additional hardware supplied by a third-party such as: routers, network cabling, new copper pairs, and other equipment.

Can I change my business NBN plan after I have signed up?

Yes, you can. Upgrades are available for all our business NBN plans. However, plan downgrades are not applicable while your contract period is in effect. All of Alltel’s NBN business plans have a minimum contract term of 12 months.

If you wish to cancel your service prior to your plan expiry, we require a 30-day advanced written notice. You will also be subject to early termination fees depending on your chosen business NBN plan.

Can I port my existing phone number when I switch to the NBN?

Of course! We can port (transfer) your existing phone number as long as it remains active. You can include this as part of your request when you sign up for any Alltel business NBN plan.

To facilitate a smooth porting process, ensure that your existing phone number remains active throughout the entire porting process. Once the porting process has been completed, you can use your phone port together with your NBN compatible router or connect through a business phone system.

What hardware do I need for a business NBN connection?

First, you will need a business NBN compatible router. You can purchase a business-grade router directly from Alltel by upgrading your plan to a business NBN bundle. You can also purchase one independently. However, we will not provide support for any hardware from a third-party supplier.

Other hardware requirements will depend on the type of NBN connection installed in your area. For instance, if you are connected via Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), then you will need a connection box and a utility box installed. These will be supplied and installed by NBN™ Co.’s technicians.

Alltel will not cover the cost of any additional hardware or infrastructure required in your area.

Can I use my existing business-grade router?

You may be able to use your existing router if it is a newer model. We recommend checking with your IT expert to find out if your hardware is NBN-ready or compatible.

Aside from your hardware, the quality of your internet connection may also be affected by other factors like your NBN connection type, your chosen business NBN plan, or the layout of your business. For your convenience, it’s best to match your device with your ISP’s network requirements.

At Alltel, we understand that having the right technology is vital in experiencing fast and reliable internet connection. Our NBN-ready routers are available for purchase when you bundle it with any of our business NBN plans.

Can I use my old phone with my business NBN?

It depends on the phone. If you have an existing analogue phone, then it should work on NBN fibre connections once plugged into the voice port (marked UNI-V on the modem or NTD box). In other cases, consider using a mobile phone.

Will my business NBN service work when there is power failure?

No communications technology is completely exempt from emergency situations such as power disruptions. Thus, you will not be able to use any equipment connected through the NBN while your power is out. This can affect your phone and internet services, and any security or medical alarm systems.

To access telecommunications services during power failures, your options include using your mobile phone or plan ahead by considering a battery back-up unit to go along with your NBN connection.

What is a “New Housing Development Fee”?

There are unique cases where an NBN installation fee may apply. If you are in a new housing development area where no prior internet connection infrastructure has been installed, you will be subject to a one-time charge of $272.73 (excluding GST) as part of the New Housing Development Fee. This is because new developments require additional infrastructure and cabling which have not been put in place yet.

This additional charge is dictated by NBN™ Co.Thus, it is not covered by your business NBN plan.
