Discover Smartnumbers

Smartnumbers are distinctive phone numbers that are considered ‘the best’ 13, 1300, and 1800 numbers available. These inbound numbers come in the form of phone words which spell out your business name or service e.g. 1300 ALLTEL (1300 255 835), and numbers that come in repeating or sequenced numerical patterns e.g. 1300 50 10 50.

The cost of purchasing the rights of use to a Smartnumber varies depending on its memorability. You may buy it directly from the Alltel Shop or from ACMA with the help of our B2B specialists. Each number can cost $250 upwards. Once you have secured your number, Alltel—a Smartnumber specialist— can activate it as your provider.

Similar to regular 13, 1300, and 1800 numbers, Smartnumbers offer the same flexibility when it comes to call management. Calls to your Smartnumber are automatically redirected to one or more of your preferred phone lines. These include landlines, mobiles, VoIP phones, or a virtual receptionist service. The cost of calls to your Smartnumber will depend on the inbound service plan that you select.

These numbers stay yours for the entire life of your business as long as the service is activated within three years of allocation. Smartnumbers that remain inactive for three years will be returned to the ACMA and become available for purchase to other businesses.

Business Intro

Make a lasting first impression by answering calls with a professionally recorded message before callers are connected to you. This guarantees that every single call is answered with the same, professional greeting using your correct business name and pronunciation.

Voice Prompt Menu

Give callers the ability to direct their own calls to specific locations, departments, or team members. You customers connect with their intended recipient by following a recorded voice prompt and selecting from a customised menu. For example, ‘Press 1 for Finance, Press 2 for Sales’, etc.

Virtual Receptionist

Alltel’s Australian-based operators are available to answer your important business calls 24/7, 365 days a year. Our professionally trained virtual receptionists greet callers using your business name, take messages, and immediately forwards the details to you via SMS and email.

Using a mobile number for your business blurs the line between work and your personal life. Protect your privacy by keeping your personal numbers private and using a professional inbound number for your business. Alltel Smartnumbers give callers the impression of an established business, with several redirection options that lets you switch off at the end of the day.

When you get a Smartnumber, it becomes yours for as long as you need it. Advanced call handling functions let you redirect calls to any of your existing phones, giving you complete mobility and portability. Unlike landline numbers that are tied to a single geographic exchange, your inbound number can be used across states or even overseas.

While similar in function, 13, 1300, and 1800 Smartnumbers differ in terms of call charges. 13 numbers work exactly like 1300 numbers, but are shorter and more memorable with only 6 digits. As it comes with an additional annual government surcharge, this type of inbound number is recommended for large enterprises in highly competitive industries.

1300 number call costs are shared between the caller and the business. This makes it a popular option among SMEs who want to extend their presence on a limited budget. With callers charged a local rate, this type of inbound number is effective for deterring nuisance and unwanted callers.

1800 number call costs are completely shouldered by the business. These are recommended for established businesses that want a nationwide number that anyone can call at no charge. Since calls to these numbers are completely free for customers, they work best as after-sales and customer support lines.

What’s the difference between
purchasing a Smartnumber through
Alltel and the national database?

Smartnumbers (or phonewords) are a national resource regulated by the Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) and can be purchased through the Numbering System website. When purchasing a Smartnumber or phoneword from ACMA, you don’t technically ‘own’ it. You’re given enhanced rights of use (EROU) to that number for the time that you actively use it, which includes the ability to sell or lease that number.

Alltel’s list of phone words are numbers that we hold EROU for and lease them out to you on a region, state or national basis. Leasing our numbers out by local areas allows small businesses like yours to access high value Smartnumbers at a low-cost.

If you do purchase your own Smartnumber from the Numbering System, you will still require a carrier like Alltel to host that number for you. For pricing on hosting your Smartnumber, you can view our 1300/1800 number plans here.

Thank you for your work guys. We’ve been using your service for almost a year now and never had one problem. You offer very competitive and smart products for the communications market. We really do not have much contact with your customer service team, but I consider it as a positive thing that shows everything is working properly.
